Taking four days off completely (since last Saturday’s run) helped a lot. For 3 days, I had to take Advil to take the edge of the pain but I am drug free now and walking normally. I can still feel the pain in the left heel but it’s now a dull pain. I took a spinning class this morning and did weights for 20 minutes. I have decided to not join my group for Saturday’s 10 mile recovery run. I am going to just use the eclipitical machine to eliminate the impact. I am too close to the marathon day to chance another injury, time is not on my side. That being said, boy, I miss running. :(

The pain on my left heel is pretty bad, guess I am paying the price of pushing too hard. Even though I think I am doing exactly what I need to do to train for my first marathon. Since I am going out of town for a conference for three days, and the agenda is from 7 am to 10pm, I am going to take the opportunity to create my own “off season”. Hoping that by the end of the third day, this aweful pain will disapear so I can resume my activities (with moderation, of course).
Until then, chao!

I had some pain in the in the outer part of my left heel, starting at mile 12, it started to nag at me, when I tried taking walk breaks to shake it off, it hurts more. I wondered if it was my shoes that caused the pain. I went back to the shoe store to get a evaluation from the shoe experts, these people initially video tapes me running bare foot on the treadmill and analyized the stride in slow motion to come up with the right shoes for me. We played around with different pair of shoes and insoles.
I talked to my shoe guy who is a avid marathoner. After telling him my recent activities, he concluded that I am running too much. He said I did not allow my body to recover after a 1/2 marathon, I ran 24 miles long run less than a week later, not to mention the inbetween weekday runs. He said your sheos can only do so much even if they are perfect. He said my runs after the 24 miler should not be longer than a 3 miles a couple of times a week. That’s what tapering and recovery means. Oops, guess I screwed up!
The pain is pretty bad when I put pressure on my left side, all around the outter heel. I hope this is something that will get better with some rest. :)

Parts of this run (about 5 miles) are different grades of hills, some feel like Mt. Everest, you attack it and get to the top and you feel like you have nothing left to give except there’s a big downhill waiting for you, so you have no choice but to fly. Some hills are gradual and took on the span of 2 miles to get to a different terrian, you feel like you are running fast but you look at your watch and it’s laughing at you. Very challenging route, strong run; even with lingering soreness on my quadracepts from the 24-miler last weekend, I hauled ass on most part of the run.
Oh, and I almost got hit by a car, my running buddy smacked down the hood of the car and yelled to stop the driver who parked his car on a driveway and as I am half way pass the car, he starts to move without looking.
Being a road warrior has its risk but it’s worth it! :)

It worked, I didn’t push too hard and after the spinning class, I really stretched well. The muscle soreness in my quadriceps have gone away afterwards.
I’ll get back to running tomorrow. This week’s schedule is a bit crazy but I’ll make the best of it.

I was the only one in my pace group that was going to run 24 miles. All the people are doing the LA marathon so they are only doing a 6-mile recovery run. A few people was going to continued to 13 miles so we agree to all stick together until they have to turn around.
I wore the new shoes I got on Thursday to run, it has motion control to help my mild pronation and it’s a “wide” size. The guy at the shoe store told me and my feet had gotton wider and I have been wearing the wrong shoes with regular width. Hence the bruise and callus on parts of my feet. I feel good during the run, the pain I experienced during my race wasn’t present. I was mostly loose and relaxed, I caught up with the 9:30 pace at mile 10 and found out they had about 12 people running the 24 miles today. They graciously adopted me to run with them. Since I had no idea where the route of 24 miles would endup, it was good to be able to run with the experience runners.
I was able to hang with them till about mile 20 since their pace was faster than even the 9:30, wow, these people are strong!!!! In addition, a few of them ram the Long Beach marathon last Sunday, to be back less than 7 days to do another 24 miles at that pace is amazing. My hat out to them!
The stiffness and soreness finally set in the last 4 miles. I took a few extra walk breaks, slowed down, took it easy and stayed relaxed. After last week’s race, the stress and intensity I experienced, I was looking forward to a no-time-pressure, just-have-fun kind of a run today. And I got it, I was thinking about everything and nothing, this is the best kind of the run!
I went home and took a ice bath for 15 minutes, wow, that was intense but I know it will help me recover. I was exhausted, I crashed and slepted for 3 house in the afternoon. What a day!

It’s good to see where I stand compared to the rest of the people who ran. Not bad for my first 1/2 marathon.

Less then 5 weeks till marathon day. I realized I been taking it a little too easy during the week, I was heavily relying on my Saturday run as the core of my training. I have to maintain the steady diet of running during the week between speed intervals and hill runs to keep a balacned workout.
I downloaded the marathon training plan from runner’s world website and focused on the last five weeks of training program. Today it says to do the following:
400 meters at 5-K pace (30-second walk), 800 at 10-K pace (90-second walk), 1200
at 10-K pace (2-minute walk), 1600 at 10-K pace (3-minute walk), 1200 at 10-K pace (2-minute
walk), 800 at 10-K pace (90-second walk), 400 at 5-K pace.
My 5-K pace is 8:45 and my 10-K pace is 9:05, it turned out to be a pretty decent workout for a quick morning run. It had enough varieties to keep me from borden on the treadmill (since TV screen on the treadmill are all out, I suspect the gym forgot to pay its cable bill…)
Sunday 1/2 marathon taught me a lot and knocked my confidence down quiet a bit but it made me humble to gear up for the real challenge ahead.

The weather is cool, the course is beautiful and mostly flat. Here’s my take on my performance of the race. I started out too fast, didn’t take my scheduled walk breaks, so starting at mile 6, my left hip and left angle was hurting, and I think it took away from the enjoyment of the race. In the end, having beat the few seconds than my training time really didn’t give me that much joy. I think I wouldn’t be consumed with my discomfort for good part of the race if I had stick with my program.
The race time has not been published yet, so I only have my watch time but it wasn’t exactly acurate because I forgot to turn it off after I cross the finish line.
It was hard to keep pace with so many people, all I want to do is to pass them and I did that for 6 miles until I feel the pain. I also think this week of tapering is a complete disaster because I don’t know how to taper, I only ran once, I felt that I have lost some of my running fitness. Because I didn’t do enough running, hence, not streching and it made my really stiff.
I guess what I am trying to say is, overall, it was a good race, but I certainly leanred that the way I felt at 13 miles, there’s no way I could have done a marathon which makes me humble. Funny thing is, in my 20 miles, 22 miles long run, I didn’t fell that kind of pain. I thought if I could do 22, I can do a marathon, but it really is not that simple.
5 weeks to my marathon, back to the drawing board to figure it out.
