Getting injured is really not fun!

I have been on this roller coaster ride of “yeah, I think I am ok now to start running” and “oh, I am still not 100%”.  Last week, went to see the doctor for a return check up.  She said my peroneal tendon is healing but not complete, she also said that resting means, no activity!  I took it to mean, as long as I am not running, I am resting, so the spinning, lifting, walking doesn’t count.  I guess I was wrong.  :(

My doctor did admit that even if she would put me in a walking cast for two weeks, she can not garentee that I would hit the ground running.  In fact, I would probably need rehab after that.  I strongly oppose this suggestion and we agreed on a alternate training schedule.

As is, I am working with a modified training schedule for February 1st marathon since I have been off of running for about three weeks, the doctor asked me to cut the mileage further down to 50% for two weeks and if I feel ok, do 75% for a week.  If I am doing well with that, continue on with my regular training.  But if at anytime, the pain returns, I must scrap the marathon idea and sit out for the next one.  I was VERY disappoited at this news for a few days (hence, no posting).  This can not happen to me two marathons in a row, I just can’t accept it!

I restarted running on my treadmill both Saturday and today, just slow short runs.  I felt good on both days which is encouraging.  I just have to take it easy and NOT overdo it to send me right back to where I started.

A year ago, I would not have even thought about running a marathon, now…  I want it so bad, I can taste it!  I see the problem with training for a marathon, the journey is so long, anything can go wrong.  I am certainly not the first person to sit out a race, I just didn’t think it would happen to me.  Arrogant, huh? The bright side of this story is, this has made me very humble, it’s like learning to walk again.  At my peak condition, I wouldn’t run anything less than 5 miles, it was not worth getting dressed for.  Now…I am grateful to run 2 with no pain.  Funny how perspective changes.

Getting injured isn’t fun. I started having symptoms of plantar fasciitis last November, but found ways to keep running. In mid-December I decided to take a 2 week rest. I started running again on January 1, because I had plans. I visited a podiatrist and was told that I had peroneal tendinitis, not plantar fasciitis, and that I could keep training for the Mardi Gras marathon. After that it was like a chain wreck. My hip hurt, my knee hurt. Soon everything hurt. I finished the marathon, but have not been able to run regularly since February. I think I’m finally ready to get back to normal, but it has been a long year. Listen to your doctor. Hang in there. A marathon is waiting for you.

Lulu sorry to hear about the continued healing. I know how you feel. I really do. I ran 13.1 for the first time yesterday. My knee didn’t really hurt during the run, only after when I started walking. I think its the same ligament. But that is ok. I’ve been taking this stuff I found at Costco. It’s called Celadrin. It is supposed to be 6x better than Glucosamine/Chondroitin mix. I was taking those, but started taking this new stuff and I started feeling the healing after only one week. It is to help rebuild cartlidge and lubricate your joints. You should try it for that tendon. You can ask your doctor first if you want. I didn’t I just did research on the internet and started taking it. I love it.

As far as the marathon comment you made. I want it so bad I can taste it! LOL I actually teared up when I told my son I was .1 away from my own half marathon. I didn’t realize until that moment the passion I had for running. Although I’ll admit that I thought ‘Shoot..I gotta do that twice for a marathon!’ LOL But with training it will be a breeze.

You’ll be ok, but you HAVE to give it time to heal. I’m going to don my knee brace again for the next couple of days so I don’t work the ligament.

    Keep chargin Tiger! ;-)
